A founding value in library science is that libraries are growing organisms. This concept was first articulated by Dr. Shiyali Ramamrite Ranganathan—considered by many to be the father of library education—in 1931, and it is as true today as it was then. We’re all about balance and change at the Marion Public Library right now.  We’re trying to find the sweet spot where the community feels informed and up to date on our plans for a new library, but we don’t want to publicize too many specific—but speculative— details and then have to retract and replace what we shared when things change.  And if we can count on one thing with this kind of project, it’s change.  As we consider land options, infrastructure design, even things as basic as square footage requirements, each adjustment requires other alterations.  We recently created a time

What a pleasure it has been to begin to get to know the Marion community!  Since starting as the library director in late April, I have had many opportunities to visit with people who live, work, and play in the Marion area.  As a newcomer to the community, I am struck by the great parks, the wide variety of recreational events, and the friendliness of residents.  As a new member of the library staff, I am continuously impressed by the passion for service and the deep skills of library personnel; it is a joy to serve as part of this group.

It has been a long time since the last building project update largely because we have been in what’s often called “hurry up and wait” mode. The Holidays added a bit of delay, as they usually do, but we are now close to a new phase of activity.   At the time of the last report, the library staff had finished working with our architect, Joe Huberty of Engberg-Anderson, to accomplish a couple of tasks that are essential for preliminary design and cost estimating.
